County Town

Written by Duncan Wells - Performance by Wayne Nicholson

Bobby left the fish plant six thousand dollars in his pants
went directly home and packed his bags
said something about easy street
and corners where sweet lovers meet
his mother told that boy to act his age
she said I'll see you in October if the wind is blowin' right
he said don't bother waitin' I ain't comin' back in this life.

You don't have to be somewhere you don't wanna be
you won't ever know no one like you know me
you set up the peices and it all falls down
it never was like this back in my County Town.

Corduroys and coveralls, assembly lines that never stall
findin' work it wasn't all that hard
brighter lights make longer nights
but everything was alright
he had a bedroom and a hundred dollar car
he fit in with the workin' class but didn't like the pay
he didn't bother quittin' he just didn't show the next day.

You don't have to be somewhere you don't wanna be
you won't ever know no one like you know me
you set up the peices and it all falls down
it never was like this back in my County Town.

He got in with the locals
cos' there was nothin' else to do
boy in the big city
slips a knife into his shoe
pulled it on a body
and he watched that body fall
now he's hidin' from his shadow
he's runnin' from the law

You don't have to be somewhere you don't wanna be
you won't ever know no one like you know me
you set up the peices and it all falls down
it never was like this back in my County Town.

Bobby left his easy street twenty years without release
locked up in Kingston Penitentiary
his mother wrote him every month
signed her letters "all my love"
but nothing that his mother had to say
could change his way of thinking could change his attitude
he didn't bother writing back I guess it only proves

You don't have to be somewhere you don't wanna be
you won't ever know no one like you know me
you set up the peices and it all falls down
it never was like this back in my County Town.
