Teachers

To present this in-class safety education program from The Love & Safety Club, you need to purchase the song, Whoa Nellie for $1.99 and download the accompanying coloring page. Both can be found in the left hand menu of this page. Print off enough coloring pages for every child in your classroom. You will also need a flip chart or, if you prefer, a classroom whiteboard or chalkboard.

The Presentation

The presentation begins by asking the children to listen to the song you are about to play for them, and to pay attention to the words and the message in the song. Please note that the four questions below are suggestions only. Teachers and presenters can choose to ask any questions they feel are appropriate and that might generate responses and a positive discussion.

  • Ask the children what the song was about
  • What was Nellie doing in the song?
  • Why was the song going faster and faster?
  • Other than running how else can you hurt yourself?

On the flip chart, make a list of all the responses given by the children concerning ways they can hurt themselves.

The Coloring Page

Play the song again while passing out the coloring pages. When you look at the coloring page you will see a little girl, Nellie, laid up in a hospital bed. She has a broken leg. Before the coloring begins, (or after if you prefer) ask the children to write a get well soon message to Nellie.

Closing Questions

When the coloring exercise is completed and all children have settled back to their seats engage them in a discussion about dangerous running. Ask them if they have ever hurt themselves, received an injury or even a bandage from running, slipping, falling and cutting or scraping themselves. Ask them what they have learned from the lesson. Let them speak.

And if there is any extra time, ask the children if they would like to hear the song again.

If you are interested in purchasing the complete Love & Safety Club In-Class Safety Education Program, the cost is $30. It includes a full length, professionally recorded CD of safety education songs, coloring pages suitable for printing and photocopying, a step by step instructional, and a package of 50 Love & Safety Club membership cards.

All material at this site is the property of Duncan Wells. If you would like to use any of the songs or playscripts it is important that you contact the author.
